Sickboy

Join hosts Jeremie, Brian, and Taylor as they hangout and have an unapologetic, unpolished and unfiltered discussion about what it's like to live life with a disease, in the hopes of finding humour in an otherwise taboo and sometimes dark subject.

Eugene lives a rockstar lifestyle. Owning one of the most renowned clubs in Canada the man knows a thing or two about how to party. So it sort of makes sense that he mistook a full-blown stroke for a raging hangover. Thankfully he was able to get the help he needed! This week we follow Eugene along on a wild tale from Mexico, to Canada all in the search for what the heck was going on in his brain!

Diane spent her entire life learning to navigate the world without vision to guide her and boy, did she figure it out. Diane suffers from Retinitis pigmentosa but that doesn't hold her back from being a tri-athlete, a former stand up comic, and currently the director of the CNIB Guide Dogs. We can't contain our excitement for this weeks episode! We sit down with long time dream guest of Sickboy, Dr. Brian Goldman. A Canadian emergency physician, author, public speaker, and host of CBC's The Dose and White Coat Black Art. We talk about the behind closed doors culture of health care workers, the harsh realities of COVID, and Brians recent search for what kindness truly looks likeā€”in himself and in others, during his work on writing his latest book The Power Of Kindness.

Referenced in the episode: Ted Talk - Doctors Make Mistakes. Can we talk about that?: https://www.ted.com/talks/brian_goldman_doctors_make_mistakes_can_we_talk_about_that?language=en

We're back with another edition of Feel Good Friday! This week we talk about the world opening back up! If you got your cigs, smoke em' like Brians father slamming his drum kit and 2nd hand smoking out the Stever boys! Taylor gets tested for COVID and acts tough about it, and Jeremie is installing a glory hole in his back yard as directed by public health! Then we ask: what is COVID like for folks who use their mouths for their hands?

This week we throwback to two conversations we've had in past episodes about racial inequities within the Canadian healthcare system due to systematic and institutionalized racism. First, we hear from Verena Rizg, a nurse practitioner, about what she's learned about how race affects both giving and receiving care in her time having worked in the prison system. Then we dive into the world of Social illness Dr. Ingrid Waldron. Dr. Waldron is the author of the book, There's Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities. The book was also the inspiration for the Netflix Documentary by the same name. It examines the legacy of environmental racism and its health impacts in Indigenous and Black communities in Canada, using Nova Scotia as a case study.
