Sickboy

Join hosts Jeremie, Brian, and Taylor as they hangout and have an unapologetic, unpolished and unfiltered discussion about what it's like to live life with a disease, in the hopes of finding humour in an otherwise taboo and sometimes dark subject.

It's safe to say that our recorded conversation with Matt back in July of 2015 was the conversation that set the tone for what Sickboy would become. Matthew was hilarious, insightful, intelligent and self aware. On January 28th 2017 Matthew passed away from his battle with brain cancer. Matt was an incredibly special person and he's left the world a brighter and more beautiful place. Here is our original conversation with Matt which aired in September 2015.

Jeremie, Brian, Taylor and special guest Matthew Amyotte have a frank and sometimes offside conversation about what it's like to live with Brain Cancer. The boys chat about everything from facing your own mortality, to how chronic illness affects relationships, to the story behind a man's struggles with a life threatening diagnosis. This is an episode you don’t want to miss!

I set out to open my eyes to the world, but came back nearly blinded by it.”

What do you do when you're in a third world country and you get an eye infection that goes from bad to the absolute worst?

This week we sit down with Kevin to talk about his experience of Biking from Vancouver to Central America only to end up with the one eye infection to rule them all! One minute everything is fine, then next minute he has pulled over because his vision is rapidly deteriorating.

This episode is chock full of adventure, gag inducing eye j**z, and life altering experiences.

When you're 5'7" weighing it at only 90lbs, something's gotta give. From in-patient hospital programs, tapping your feet as sneaky exercise, and a relationship with healthy eating that goes above and beyond reality, Catherine's been through a lot. On a mission to heal her mind and repair her body, Catherine opens up about what it's like to live with an eating disorder that tries to trick her at every turn.

Tune in this week for a special episode on Mental Illness. With Bell Let's Talk coming up on Wednesday, it is not only important for us to talk about Mental Illness, but also to listen intently to those who speak up. Let's talk about it.

One of the first beautiful people we were able to speak with on the show, and no doubt, one of the most inspiring. Layton was truly a man of passion. It spewed (he'd like that word) from every pore.

He taught us the most important lesson on the human condition: We will always take life for granted. It is in the moments that we realize this, that we are able to truly live, until we inevitable slip back into the routine, the day to day, to be awoken once again.

You made an impact like you wouldn't believe. You used social media in the way we should all take note of: To inspire passion and thoughtfulness, reflection and introspection in us all. Your lasting impression on us will be the grace with which you saw death. As a beautiful chapter that we will all someday endure.

Live now, for you are alive. Love and laugh now, for you are alive. And when you forget the living, the loving and the laughing, you will remember it again as if for the first time. And it will be beautiful.

When Mark has a grand mal seizure at SXSW in downtown Ausitn, TX his life was forever changed. One moment all is normal, the next moment waking up on a gurney covered in blood and beginning his long no holds barred fist fight with Brain Cancer.

Mark and Jeremie hunker down in a small hut on the beaches of Maui and dive deep into living with Terminal Brain Cancer. A love story worthy of the silver screen, contemplation of the realities of life and what comes after death, and of course music. Mark is a prolific music critic and blogger. While recounting his life pre and post cancer he weaves in and out of his favourite songs of the time.

if you think you've waited a long time in the emergency room, John Ross has been there 25 years, slowly but surely pulling odd objects out of people's buttholes.

But in all seriousness we spent some time out at the beautiful and majestic Shobac Cottages/Studio's in Riverport Nova Scotia for an intimate live living room show to chat with Dr John Ross about his career as the head of the ER at the QEII hospital. We dive deep into everything from weird objects in butts, to managing crimson hot rage towards patients, to calling a Code Orange... TWICE!?! (Not sure what a code orange is? Let's just say it Ain't Nuttin ta F**k Wit.) This is a very special episode and John has and still does some incredible work. It truly was an honour to speak with him!

Jeremie turns 29 years old today and he has a birthday wish that we need you to help make come true!

Since we've started this project we've had countless emails, letters, and messages from listeners like yourself telling us about how Sickboy Podcast has impacted your lives. For Jeremie's 29th birthday all he wants is to put faces to the names for a little project we are working on.

Has Sickboy Podcast impacted your life in some way big or small? If so we want to hear from you! Here are the rules: take 5 minutes of your day to record a video on your phone. Horizontal videos only, DUH! Start the video with "Sickboy Podcast has impacted my life by..." and fill in the rest! It can be sincere, it can be silly, it can be whatever as long as it's true to how you feel!

We love each and every one of you! And hey, if you're in Halifax we're celebrating Jeremie's big day at Good Robot Brewing Company! Swing by after 9:30PM tonight for a beer and a cough or two!

What happens when you're one of the first cases of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in your home town? A whole bunch of f**kery that's what!

This week on Sickboy we sit down with Jess and talk about her experience in dealing with a nasty case of "Super Bug"! We talk about everything from the weird names children call vagina, the horrendous origin story of a flesh eating bacteria, disgustingly horrendous visions of lancing boils on youtube, endless sexual innuendo's and much much more. Oh and of course, Happy Birthday Wanda!

You know how Mr. Fantastic can stretch and bend himself and help save the world? Yea...hyper mobility just ain't like that son. This week we sit down with Joanne during our visit to Vancouver, and although she is kicking some serious ass, learn about what it's like to be so hyper mobile that you're surgeon is #1 on speed dial. We dive into collagen, botox, bad knees, big headed surgeons, American health care BS and much much more!

Almost 13 years ago Josh Dueck, world class skier, over shot a front flip off a massive jump. He crash landed, severing his spinal column and rendering him a paraplegic without feeling from the pelvis down, never to walk again. Fast forward to present day and the first question Brian asks is “does your dick still work?”. Nice one Brian… Real nice. Although to give him credit it opened the doors for a conversation that went deep down to a level that most of us rarely have the pleasure of experiencing with someone we’ve only just met. A no holds barred fully open dialogue about the ups and downs of life from a chair. This is an incredibly special episode and we are forever grateful to have had the opportunity to shoot the sh*t with Josh.

This week we dive into the world of the unfortunately invalidated auto immune disease called Celiac's, with our new friend Allyson... the disease in which Gluten is your greatest enemy. But what is a gluten? We still don't really know - and we don’t think anyone does. However, one thing is for sure, this episode is chalk full of tidbits. For instance, did you know Corona's are legally* gluten free? Did you also know Corona's taste like crap? Now ya do... We dig deep into dispelling the myths between gluten intolerance and celiac's, vomiting & explosive diarrhea, making out with celiac's, having children or not having children, and a bunch of other fascinating stuff! So order up your favourite Pizza Hut pizza and grab a case of your favourite IPA because we’re going DEEP into the world of Celiac's Disease!

What if the men in the world could be okay with being more vulnerable? What is the men in the world held each other accountable for their words and their actions? What if more men began to openly embrace their natural feminine qualities? That’s what Connor Beaton from ManTalks is trying to cultivate in the world.

This week the fellas sit down with Connor Beaton, founder of ManTalks,  to discuss the intricacies and possible evolution of modern masculinity. They also dive into Connor’s struggle with sex addiction and how ManTalks came from his ability to be vulnerable and confront his addiction head on by speaking to it openly.

Is the recent news of Trump becoming the supreme leader of the big bad U.S. of A getting you down? Things could be worse… you could have an enlarged heart, constant diarrhea, chest pain, blood in your urine, hardcore endometriosis, skin changing colour, constant, painful orgasms for three weeks straight, random and unexplained anaphylaxis, weekly medical specialist appointments, constantly fainting, and many many MANY more things which are all happening to Brittney. For her whole life she’s lived with some sort of totally f&$%ed up mega rare issue where her whole body seems to hate her and is lashing out with vengeance. So, sure the end of the world may be close, but hey… things could always be worse. Tune in as we have our minds blown by the insanity that is Brittney and her Mystery Disease.

If you were 3'6" tall how much differently would you see the world? For Jim, not all that different.

This week on Sickboy we sit down with Jim as he describes what life is like as someone who lives with extreme Dwarfism. We create a safe space where we can ask the questions we've always wanted to ask! We talk about everything from getting busy with an average sized person, to the names Jim and other little people prefer, work as an LP, and of course the age ol' question... how big is it? We also got to speak to Jim's 11 year old son Caden, He's also a little person and he's got a sailors mouth.

Herpe Halloween everyone! This week we get extra spooky. We aren't talking about spiders or goblins or ghouls. Instead we're talking about HERPES!  The fella's are in Vancouver and sit down with their first West Coast guest Hannah, she has HSV1 & 2. The conversation is full of extra spooky. Stories of hijinks in the deep dark woods, waking up one day with sores on your lady bits, revealing to new partners you have the herps, and much more! Oh... spoiler alert! Herpes isn't nearly as scary as one might think. Tune in to find out why it hasn't ruined Hannah's life!

Today we found out that Andrew Henderson, past Sickboy guest has died. He was a fabulous human being who accepted death with grace and beauty. Andrew you have changed our lives. Thank you. May you be showered in Bambino and covered in feather boa's.  RIP.

What do you do when nobody around you can hear the music you hear? How do you explain to your loved ones that you don't recognize yourself in the mirror? Who do you call when you hear scary voices coming out of the walls?   Last week we dived into what it's like to care for a loved one with Schizophrenia. This week we sit down with Laura. She has Schizophrenia or as she likes to put it, madness. In this very raw conversation Laura opens up about her most horrifying hallucinations, the mourning of her identity before the madness set in and shares some of the art shes created through her recovery.

Oct 20, 2016

The title says it all... This week we do a little personal update for Bri-Guy. Turns out everyone's favourite lispy blonde cutie isn't a hypochondriac after all. He got (semi)tested and the results are in. ADHD positive. Will he lean into this diagnosis and use it as a crutch? Probably. Ugh... Also on a more serious note, Brians mom came down with a case of Cancer. We talk about the reaction of his friends and family and how he's handling it all!

Oct 17, 2016

This week on Sickboy: we sit down with CC, her Mom has Schizophrenia. We explore the challenges of living with someone who experiences extreme paranoia - like Xtreme paranoia... like imagine smoking up and the 5-0 roll up so you quickly ash the bud but like then you realize you're flying so high that the Po-po are actually just your buddy who just turned up with more Skunk. Yeah like that. Times a hundred. So seriously, tune into this episode... because it got us right in the feels.

Oct 10, 2016

This week on Sickboy, we sit down with Caleb. He's got ADHD. Brian thinks he also has it (big surprise), but is almost certainly wrong (as usual), Jeremie is really, really curious about adderall, and Taylor is astonished by how this episode itself is a real live example of what it's like to have ADHD

Oct 3, 2016

While Jeremie was visiting Montreal he met a young girl named Brittany. For almost half of her life Brittany never spoke a word. She suffered from a complex childhood anxiety disorder known as Selective Mutism. Jeremie and Britt explore the social challenges of growing up without a voice and the scary thought of hearing yourself speak for the first time. The two discuss first words and favourite words and Jer may or may not step over the line when it comes to "political correctness"... spoiler alert: of course he does....

Sep 26, 2016

This week on Sickboy: We sit down with Katie. A professional puker! We’ll I guess she’d really be considered an amateur puker seeing as how she isn’t getting paid to upchuck. Katie has Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. If you’re saying to yourself “what the F is that?!” look no further than our discussion with Katie. We dive deep into the world of CVS and Katies experience of bi or tri monthly 12 hour episodes of vomiting, for 10 years straight. The boys share their most epic throw up experiences, Katie trumps them all, and it turns out Jeremie likes to barf.
