Sickboy

Join hosts Jeremie, Brian, and Taylor as they hangout and have an unapologetic, unpolished and unfiltered discussion about what it's like to live life with a disease, in the hopes of finding humour in an otherwise taboo and sometimes dark subject.

This week on Sickboy, we sit down to talk with Candace Reid. Candace is newly widowed and navigating the loss and grief of her husband, Layton Reid, who was one of our original guests. We chat about what it's like to say goodbye, widow biker gangs, and inappropriately named books about how to deal with grief!

Today's show is brought to you by Warby Parker. Go to warbyparker.com/sickboy to do your very own free home-try on process.

Imagine you spend hours of your day obsessing over a million little wrinkles and scars all over your face. Obsessing to the point where it cuts into your social & work life. To the point where you become depressed and suicidal. Imagine everyone around you tells you that they don’t see what you see… except for your sister. Your twin sister. She sees what you see. And you see the same scars on her face. Obviously it must be real then right?! Nah. That’s Body Dysmorphic Disorder yo. This week we talk to Ev about her trippy experience with BDD that she shared with her identical twin. Jeremie obsesses over his acne, Brian doesn’t understand at first but then has a life changing revelation. Taylor, well Taylor just does his thang. Ya know?

This week on Sickboy Podcast: Sexual Assault. We cover a topic that no doubt will make some people feel a little bit uncomfortable. Lauren was courageous enough to sit down with the fellas and share her experience in being directly affected by a sexual assault six years ago. How one individual carelessly bestowed PTSD, sleep paralysis, depression and more upon her. It’s a conversation that three privilege males have little skin in the game aside from feelings of empathy and frustration at how some people can be so horrendous. Tune in this week with open wide open and hearts wide open.

This week on Sickboy: Meditation Saved My Life! After floating at the Floatation Centre in Halifax the boys hang out with people who make womb-simulating meditation a possibility. As always, they ask some hard hitting questions: how can floating help cope with panic attacks and death, what do the bowflex and floating have in common, and whats it like hanging out with the demogorgan in the upside down? Sit back, relax, and zone into these solfeggio frequencies - this is an episode you don’t want to miss!

Rob Dyer lost a lot of very important people to cancer in a very short amount of time. He was young, devastated and ambitious, so he decided to channel all of his emotions into one big idea: a skate marathon that started on the west coast of the United States and culminated in his hometown near Toronto. The whole idea was to prove that anything can be done with enough determination, and he hoped that this philosophy would inspire people to stay optimistic about dealing with cancer in its various forms. Needless to say, it did just that. Over the last 10 years Skate 4 Cancer has skated across multiple countries, joined forces with major bands and tours, and visited schools around the globe all raising awareness and spreading knowledge of early cancer prevention and detection. Through clothing sales, community events, and the S4C Shop they have donated over $150,000 to Wellspring to help fund educational and support programs for individuals and families affected by cancer. Rob Dyer is one gem of a human being and we hope you fall as deeply in love with him as we did.

Josh Cassidy is a world record holding Wheelchair racer. In 2010, Cassidy won the London Marathon. Oh, but here's the thing, he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer in the spine and abdomen weeks after birth. He was given a very low chance of survival but was declared cancer-free after 5 years of remission, but it left his legs partially paralyzed. Did that shit stop him? Nah. Broke the world record for the Boston marathon, a Paralympic podium contender, can do chin-ups while strapped into a wheelchair?!? This week: Our live recording from Movember house in Toronto. We dive into everything from Memories as a one year old, things that you just NEVER say to someone in a wheelchair, the origin of the word handicap and the fact that a man who is partially paralyzed has larger thighs than Jeremie.

This week on Sickboy, we sit down with Emily to chat about being born with a Cleft Palette. Does Sickboy need a 4th host? If so, Emily is it. She jives with the guys about how mouth surgery can work magic in the bedroom (or the back of a car), why rural female Filipinos need to stop sinning so god damn much, and why Brian think it would be best to live forever....wait, is that this episode? Whatever. Either way, he's wrong.

What comes to mind when you think about arthritis? Often times it’s elderly people with walkers, dentures, walk in bath tubs and tweed hats. Rarely do we picture a young vibrant party loving 24 year old who spends her time getting’ liquored down at Dooley’s and accidentally “skull f**ing” her boyfriend.  This week the boys sit down with Meghan and talk about the challenges of living with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis! They touch on everything from her elephant man like knees, to the myth of cracking your knuckles, to elderly women coughing in your face, to the challenges of managing an invisible illness. So sit down, make a tight fist, hold on tight and buckle up… this one is a doozy.

OH! also… Jeremie made out with a boy. This week is JAM packed. Enjoy.

It's safe to say that our recorded conversation with Matt back in July of 2015 was the conversation that set the tone for what Sickboy would become. Matthew was hilarious, insightful, intelligent and self aware. On January 28th 2017 Matthew passed away from his battle with brain cancer. Matt was an incredibly special person and he's left the world a brighter and more beautiful place. Here is our original conversation with Matt which aired in September 2015.

Jeremie, Brian, Taylor and special guest Matthew Amyotte have a frank and sometimes offside conversation about what it's like to live with Brain Cancer. The boys chat about everything from facing your own mortality, to how chronic illness affects relationships, to the story behind a man's struggles with a life threatening diagnosis. This is an episode you don’t want to miss!

One of the first beautiful people we were able to speak with on the show, and no doubt, one of the most inspiring. Layton was truly a man of passion. It spewed (he'd like that word) from every pore.

He taught us the most important lesson on the human condition: We will always take life for granted. It is in the moments that we realize this, that we are able to truly live, until we inevitable slip back into the routine, the day to day, to be awoken once again.

You made an impact like you wouldn't believe. You used social media in the way we should all take note of: To inspire passion and thoughtfulness, reflection and introspection in us all. Your lasting impression on us will be the grace with which you saw death. As a beautiful chapter that we will all someday endure.

Live now, for you are alive. Love and laugh now, for you are alive. And when you forget the living, the loving and the laughing, you will remember it again as if for the first time. And it will be beautiful.

When Mark has a grand mal seizure at SXSW in downtown Ausitn, TX his life was forever changed. One moment all is normal, the next moment waking up on a gurney covered in blood and beginning his long no holds barred fist fight with Brain Cancer.

Mark and Jeremie hunker down in a small hut on the beaches of Maui and dive deep into living with Terminal Brain Cancer. A love story worthy of the silver screen, contemplation of the realities of life and what comes after death, and of course music. Mark is a prolific music critic and blogger. While recounting his life pre and post cancer he weaves in and out of his favourite songs of the time.

if you think you've waited a long time in the emergency room, John Ross has been there 25 years, slowly but surely pulling odd objects out of people's buttholes.

But in all seriousness we spent some time out at the beautiful and majestic Shobac Cottages/Studio's in Riverport Nova Scotia for an intimate live living room show to chat with Dr John Ross about his career as the head of the ER at the QEII hospital. We dive deep into everything from weird objects in butts, to managing crimson hot rage towards patients, to calling a Code Orange... TWICE!?! (Not sure what a code orange is? Let's just say it Ain't Nuttin ta F**k Wit.) This is a very special episode and John has and still does some incredible work. It truly was an honour to speak with him!

Jeremie turns 29 years old today and he has a birthday wish that we need you to help make come true!

Since we've started this project we've had countless emails, letters, and messages from listeners like yourself telling us about how Sickboy Podcast has impacted your lives. For Jeremie's 29th birthday all he wants is to put faces to the names for a little project we are working on.

Has Sickboy Podcast impacted your life in some way big or small? If so we want to hear from you! Here are the rules: take 5 minutes of your day to record a video on your phone. Horizontal videos only, DUH! Start the video with "Sickboy Podcast has impacted my life by..." and fill in the rest! It can be sincere, it can be silly, it can be whatever as long as it's true to how you feel!

We love each and every one of you! And hey, if you're in Halifax we're celebrating Jeremie's big day at Good Robot Brewing Company! Swing by after 9:30PM tonight for a beer and a cough or two!

What happens when you're one of the first cases of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in your home town? A whole bunch of f**kery that's what!

This week on Sickboy we sit down with Jess and talk about her experience in dealing with a nasty case of "Super Bug"! We talk about everything from the weird names children call vagina, the horrendous origin story of a flesh eating bacteria, disgustingly horrendous visions of lancing boils on youtube, endless sexual innuendo's and much much more. Oh and of course, Happy Birthday Wanda!
