Sickboy

Join hosts Jeremie, Brian, and Taylor as they hangout and have an unapologetic, unpolished and unfiltered discussion about what it's like to live life with a disease, in the hopes of finding humour in an otherwise taboo and sometimes dark subject.

This week on Sickboy the fellas continue their adventure in Toronto and sit down with Dr. Liz Jones (such a cool name). What is she dealing with? A hearing condition called Otosclerosis. What’s life like as a Doctor who suffers from severe hearing loss? Or experiencing a constant high pitch ringing in the ear?  They dive into Boy Meets World, the cutest bones in the world, Jeremie's alcoholism, ear surgery and hearing aids that talk to you. Poor Liz has a hard time hearing a single word that comes out of Taylor's mouth because he just goes about the world mumbling and  whispering the entire god damn time.

We have a very special episode for you this week! Out of the blue we were asked if we could hop on a call with none other than american actor and stand up comedian TJ Miller from HBO's Silicon Valley, Marvel's Deadpool and of course who could forget The Emoji Movie!

Turns out TJ suffers from a cerebral arteriovenous malformation. You might not expect such profound thought to pour out of such a silly and jovial comedian, but TJ reminds us that even the characters we love on our favourite shows can be dealt a hand that changes the way we look at life & death. Jeremie and Taylor were over the moon for with chance to chat with TJ, and we hope you love the open and honest conversation, as always.

Catch TJ on his #JFLAlt Canadian tour and hit him up on on twitter at @nottjmiller. Tell him @Sickboypodcast sent you.

This week on Sickboy we sit down with Ardra and dig into what it's like to live with MS, what it's like to rock a walker as a young woman, and how simple catheters can be, although, Taylor is still a little confused. Accessibility becomes a hot topic and we learn just how much of our society is constructed without it in mind. We had a really enlightening conversation and we want to give a huge shoutout to Ardra's blog, Tripping on Air, at trippingonair.com

This week on Sickboy the three amigos are finally (damn daniel) back at it again! This time around It’s story time with Jeremie who luckily didn’t die during his recent hospital woes. God bless him as he is so gosh darn humble about the whole horrifying ordeal. We dive deep deep deep into his colon that no longer exists. “Intussusception The Sequel” has it all. Deep butt hole fingering, hardcore opioids, run down terrifying hospitals. a violent vomit sesh, tubes in holes… like, all the holes, strap on dildos and of course a good ol’ laugh or two!

This week on Sickboy we sit down with Josh and dive into PTSD, life as a paramedic and a long journey with debilitating Crohn's disease. The boys try to wrap their heads around a mental illness that dates back to a traumatic childhood and how a struggle with Crohn’s caused Josh to look at how worth while it was to keep living. Now a proud father of two, Josh strives to connect with his children with affection and love, breaking the cycle that created his struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This week on Sickboy, the guys sit down with founder of Rethink Breast Cancer, MJ DeCoteau. After losing her mother and grandmother to breast cancer she was inspired to rethink the way we talk about this illness. Reimagining dated and impersonal initiatives, she steered the movement towards a younger demographic and gave them the resources to understand how to cope. The guys dive into MJ’s story of personal loss, learn about boob health, bust some boob cancer myths, and (most importantly) find out about a raging party that you don’t want to miss. Buckle up for a show full of Avatar references and boys asking questions about boobies!

This week, we’re mixing it up a little bit. We talk to Jordan Whelan about what it’s like to be a gay man. Here at Sickboy HQ, we don’t only like to talk about what it’s like to be sick, we love to dispel stigma, and this week’s episode dives head first into growing up, coming out and living it up as a young gay man. Jordan also has colitis, which certainly makes for a few complications in the sex department. Taylor is astounded at how much he doesn’t know about being gay, Brian gets reigned in by Jeremie, and Jer is super interested to know about being a “power bottom”. Love you all!

This week on Sickboy the fellas sit down with Kalyn who was once infected with the horrifying and totally dangerous and deadly ZIKA VIRUS! Wait... Zika? Like... the mosquito/sexually transmitted virus Zika? Where you get a rash and some achy joints? And gotta lay down for a day or two? YEAH THAT ZIKA! Oh, and by the way it definitely ain't as bad as you think unless you're looking to get pregnant. In that case DO NOT GET ZIKA!

This week on Sickboy the guys sit down with an 18 year old Knight in shining armour. Literally. Danielle lives with a Mast Cell and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome but that doesn’t stop her from taking part in medieval battles. We dive into the world of L.A.R.P and Brian geeks out a little too much on World of Warcraft. Danielle reminds us of the importance of developing and seeking community in times of need. Oh, and one more thing a real life opera singer stops the studio for a show.

This week on Sickboy we sit down with Haley and talk heart stuff, time bombs and the most ideal place to stick a catheter in your body.

What is a high heart beat? 150 bpm? 180bpm? Try 260….while sitting still….for 6 hours. For Haley, this is all apart of an episode of Supraventricular Tachycardia, or more boringly referred to as SVT. Having to take drugs that give you the feeling of imminent death and shoving catheters up through your crotch are a just a part of the experience. Join us for an ever-riveting conversation about the absurdity of living illness.

This episode of Sickboy is brought to you by Hello Fresh. Go to http://www.hellofresh.ca and enter the promo code SICKBOY50 to get 50% of your first box!

Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.” - Alan Moore. For this week’s very special episode we speak to Sunee Dhaliwal, Canadian stand up comedian, about life as a touring comedian, using humour and performance to manage grief, the inevitability of offending someone. Check Sunee out on social media @sunnydcomedy.

Ever caught a lethal bacterial infection at a house party before? Of course not, that would be the worst house part ever. Unfortunately, Ian has been to that house party, and he picked up just that - Bacterial Meningitis. What is Meningitis? The hell if we know, that's why we got young Ian to drop by and tell us all about it. Catheters, nightmares, comas, expanding brains...this one's got it all. Enjoy!

We’ve made it Sicko’s! EPISODE 100!?!?! Get ready to get spiritual af! What is life? What is consciousness? What is the soul?  What is reality? This week we sit down with David Maginley, M.Div, an interfaith chaplain who offers guidance to those within palliative care. Wait, Sickboy mixed with religion?! Don’t worry there’s not much starch in this clergy man’s collar. He’s not interested in what you believe, he’s interested in the quality of your love. Oh and on top of all that, David has a rare form of cancer that expresses itself not unlike the critically acclaimed Jason Statham film ‘Crank’. A ticking cancer time bomb within his body that once went off and killed him. Yup… David died. But he has risen and sits down with the boys to spread some wisdom and blow some minds. Check out what David is up to and buy a copy of his latest book "Beyond Surviving" over at his website http://www.davidmaginley.com/

It’s not everyday you meet a couple of people and know immediately that you were meant to be besties, so we took full advantage when we met Zoe and Sophia, hosts of Just Chips Dot Com (the podcast, not the website) and invited them to join us for a host episode we would be recording while in TO. Most notably, we chatted about what our badass Rock n’ Roll death would be, and that went in a lot of interesting directions. Strap in, check it out & have fun.

Stomas, ports, megacolons, no colons, and dogs. This weeks episode is all sorts of silly, disgusting, hilarious, and fascinating. Patrick, much like dog, has only one meter of small intestine. He has  Hirschsprung's Disease, a form of megacolon. What is a megacolon? Exactly what it sounds like, a big ass colon. With no colon, a jajunostomy, a port and a useless asshole, Patrick lives a rather interesting life. Get ready for some silly.

What happens when you have a tumour wrapped around your carotid artery? A whole wack load of life long lessons. This week on Sickboy the fellas sit down with Judith John, former VP of Communications for SickKids and frequent flyer of the healthcare system. Judith unfortunately had to step down from her executive role at SickKids after doctors found a tumour on her brain, but that didn’t stop this wonderful woman from making a difference in the world. We talk ultimate booger removal, jeremie’s transition from the IWK to the QEII adult clinic, the Canadian healthcare system VS American healthcare system, and a buttload more.

Jun 26, 2017

This week on Sickboy the guys sit down with Jesse Hayman, Director of Development & Communications at Jack.org.

They dive deep into the world of grief; what is the difference between mental health & mental illness? is there a right way to grieve? and what is the most practical way to circumcise a baby? Okay, maybe that last one is a bit of a stretch…

Jesse’s ability to be vulnerable about his experience with grief is empowering and, with his colleagues at Jack.org, he is changing the way we think about mental health.
